Description of Workshop: PASSING workshops are designed to enable participants who have previously attended a three or four day Social Role Valorization(SRV) workshop to gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and of how the promotion of valued roles can enable people who are disabled or devalued to experience “the good things of life”. The workshop is directed towards people in human services who are interested in bringing about change. Participation is welcome from service users, family members, human service workers/managers, students, advocates, volunteers & board members. Previous attendance at a three or four day SRV workshop is a prerequisite for this event.
In this workshop, participants are organized into teams of approximately six people plus a team leader, who has had previous PASSING experience. During the course of the workshop the teams each visit and analyze two different human service programs (e.g. a group residence, school program, adult day support programs, etc.). Each site visit includes a lengthy interview with the program managers along with time spent meeting the service users and observing the program. Following this, the team engages in a lengthy and depthful process through which they seek to understand how the program is experienced by the service users and how various aspects of the program contribute (or impede) the development of valued social roles, through social image enhancement and personal competency enhancement. At the final plenary session, team leaders share their teams’ findings with the larger group, enabling all participants to more fully appreciate some of the broader issues pertaining to services for devalued people. This final session provides an opportunity to clarify PASSING issues, to share experiences and to provide feedback about the workshop and its potential impact.
The course is very intensive. It begins on Monday at 8:00 a.m. sharp with an overview of the PASSING application guidelines and team preparation for the site visits. The first site visit begins after this morning session. Teams return in the evening and then spend 2-3 hours doing their individual ratings. The focus of the second day is a lengthy “conciliation” session wherein each PASSING rating is analyzed and discussed until the team reaches a consensus on the service’s performance, a process that is likely to extend into the late evening. The third day begins with a second site visit, followed by individual ratings, and the start of the conciliation process, again working into the late evening. Conciliation of the second site concludes on Thursday by dinner time. The team meets on the final morning to reflect on their workshop experience and to discuss what other SRV events they might want to participate. The workshop ends after the final plenary session on Friday, by early afternoon.
|PASSING workshops require an intense commitment of time and energy. Participants should arrive well rested and plan to forego all outside involvements during the workshop. They are expected to have read the PASSING Ratings Manual prior to the workshop. They must be present by 8 a.m. on the first day and must be fully present and participating throughout the workshop, including all evening sessions, with their team. It should be noted that while past PASSING participants report that these are among the most demanding workshops they have attended, they rarely express dissatisfaction and, in fact, appreciate the workshop’s rigor and high level of engagement.|
