This will present a new way of understanding the lives of marginalized people. Social devaluation is presented as a crucial problem that can lead to many negative life experiences for devalued people. Participants will learn about the impact of such experiences and some ways to address social devaluation, namely assisting marginalized people to gain socially valued roles. The concepts introduced in this workshop are part of Social Role Valorization (SRV), developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger, a prominent thinker and leader in human services. This short training can be thought of as a

preliminary introduction to SRV theory.

This workshop is delivered via lecture, questions, and discussion. Come prepared to think about the devalued people you know, their life experiences,

and the social roles they fill in life. The workshop material is presented sequentially and therefore, full attendance at each session is

required. To maximize learning, each participant should join on a separate computer. Participants will need to use both video and microphone during all

sessions

The Southern Ontario Training Group (SOTG) recognizes that we live, learn and teach on land that has long been the traditional territories of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, the Cree and the Wendat peoples.

We commit to increasing awareness and understanding of our shared history, to acknowledging injustices of the past, and to working towards a more just shared future.

The SOTG endeavours to stand alongside people who are devalued by our society, including those discriminated against because of their heritage or cultural identity. We believe that Social Role Valorization offers a means of understanding devaluation and helpful strategies to address it.
